Brevet New World
The 2019 Yawp! will be offering its third annal Brevet (pronounced bru-vay). It used to be called the Randonnee-nae, but we changed the name to Brevet New World because it better suits our catalog of rides based on literary puns, and because it's easier to spell.
We'll adhere to the traditional rules of a brevet; there may be controls at which riders are required to have their passports stamped, there will be a minimum and maximum speed, and we will ride a minimum of 200 kilometers. A brevet is not a race; riders strive to finish a course within a specified time, and receive equal recognition regardless of finishing order. Riders can ride alone or in groups, and are expected to be self-sufficient.
With that said, keep in mind that a brevet is kind of like an arctic exploration; the goal isn't to be the first one to return, but to do what you can to make sure everyone on the exploration makes it back. You aren't responsible for anyone else, but it'd be real swell if you helped a fellow participant in need.
Therefore, please plan to remain at the finish line until 8:30pm to cheer on everyone who completes Brevet New World.
There will be an entry fee of $15. Administrative costs for this event have grown beyond our means, so a portion of this fee will go toward your rewards, should you finish, and the remainder will be donated to charity. (In 2018 we raised over $700 for Bicycle Colorado.)
If snow or severe rain is forecast, we may reschedule. We want to ride this ride, but the bike shop gets wildly busy in the summer (or let's hope it will), and we can't promise that our schedule will accommodate a rain date. We bring all of this up to say that whether the ride does or does not occur as scheduled, we'll be donating your entry fee to charity regardless.
We have a new course for 2019. The course is not marked, and despite being luddites ourselves, we begrudgingly recommend using a GPS device for navigation. The route is almost entirely off of streets, so cue sheets won't help. If you don't have or don't want to use a GPS device, we'll have maps for sale at the bike shop that we'd be happy to mark the route on for you. The 2019 course will be revealed on or around April 15th. Check back then for details.
This is a self-supported ride. There are gas stations near the route, so if your body runs well on Slim Jims and hot Cheetos, you're in luck.
You will receive a finisher's prize.
BREVET NEW WORLD FAQ
Will the course be marked?
No. The course is not marked, and despite being luddites ourselves, we begrudgingly recommend using a GPS device for navigation. The route is almost entirely off of streets, so cue sheets won't be of help. If you don't have or don't want to use a GPS device, we'll have Denver regional maps for sale at the bike shop that we'd be happy to mark the route on for you.
Will there be a drop bag service?
What if I start but decide I can't finish?
We understand that a variety of things can happen out there, from mechanicals to illness. If you need to abandon the ride, at the very least please send a text message to the bike shop so that we know what happened to you. There is no sag wagon.
How long do I have to finish the ride?
You have 13.5 hours, which will be 8:30pm.
Is this a group ride?
No. Most of the rides that we offer here at Yawp! are group rides, but because this ride is lengthy, riders need to be able to ride at their own pace.
Why would I do this?
Anyone who rides 200km is given the title of "Randonneur." They carry that title for life! Who wouldn't want that? Also, because bikes, beer, etc. You'll also probably get a finisher's patch.
Did you say beer?
Yes. Yes we did. If you finish Brevet New World, you may have a beer.
